these days

23 January 2012

this year’s January
has been a series
of starts and stops,
with seemingly
more stops
than starts.

all the self-expectations
and -pressure
to begin anew:

new year,
fresh start,
ready, set, go!

and stumble,
and sometimes tumble,
and fall.

i feel like my life
has been on hold,
divided in two
without being
fully present
in either one.

yet amidst,
it is the little things,
bits and pieces
still unbroken
and the subtle curiosities
that carry on.

carry me on
and drive me forward,
one more day,
day after day.

and so it is,
these days.

a few good things no. 2

20 January 2012

1. i truly appreciated jane's softly, softly post this week. i too wrote about giving way to softer sentiments awhile ago and am increasingly disarming myself, so i immediately felt a kind of fellowship in reading jane's account of exploring her own taste for softer notes.

2. speaking of soft sentiments, i also loved anabela's feature on this week's closet & casa. it is so naturally and perfectly her. i love how anabela's style is so honest and uncontrived, while still inspiring awe. i will be honest in saying that she has undoubtedly influenced me in embracing my softer side in my own particular way, and i don't think i am the only one on whom she has had this effect!

3. in my seemingly never-ending browsing for wedding inspiration, i have recently become enamoured with honey of a thousand flowers. sarah's gorgeous garden aesthetic speaks for itself.

4. rifle paper co. is having a wonderful 25% off calendar sale that continues until monday. i already ordered this botanical beauty.

5. status anxiety's audrey wallet in dark green!

6. i've been slowly collecting antique teacups, and i love this playful idea for displaying art (via Poppytalk).

7. i love the east coast photos from nikole's recent blog post by photographer michael graydon. they are part of a story called "the scent of salted air" in volume two of kinfolk telling of a roadtrip to Prince Edward Island. the sense of atmosphere is perfect.

8. julianna swaney is one of my favourite artist's, so naturally i love her wedding invitation design for the recentlly launched one handspun day. while the collection is a little too soft and feminine for andew and me, i love it nonetheless, and i'm sure that it will make the right couple's hearts flutter.

9. gorgeous coral silk chiffon 1920s flapper dress from the ever-lovely dear golden.

have a lovely weekend, xo

mes dames

19 January 2012

i am REALLY loving this series of editorial photos shot by Swedish photographer Anna Malmberg in Paris for Mes Dames' S/S 2012 collection. they're all so soft & dreamy, with a subtle touch of the "mystery and loneliness" with which Anna characterizes her work, i couldn't resist sharing them here. with so much winter around here lately, i cannot help but feel the sweet lure of spring and summer, of secret gardens and lush forests....

a selection of the photos were recently featured in the latest issue of welikewelove, where they first captured my heart. you can also view the photographer's portfolio here and a gorgeous series of behind-the-scenes photos here. the full Mes Dames Spring/Summer 2012 lookbook is available here.

oui, je suis amoureuse. et vous?

so successful has been the camera's role in beautifying the world that photographs, rather than the world, have become the standard of the beautiful.

- susan sontag

i find myself continually returning to photgrapher Jonathan Levitt's photoblog, GRASSDOE, for bits of inspiration and glimpses into worlds that are at once other and familiar, where i feel a little bit at home. his photographs are raw and honest and they all possess a simple beauty, whatever season, scene, subject, or way of life they capture. looking at them, i am reminded of the above quote from Susan Sontag's On Photography (1977), except that in Levitt's photos, it is the world that retains it's beauty in the face of the camera. i really think i could live in almost any one of them.

a few good things no. 1

13 January 2012

another friday, already. looking forward to spending the weekend with my love(s) and starting fresh next week. i have so many ongoing projects i need to focus on and seriously get to work! it's time to prioritize and get organized.

for now, here are a few good things from around the internet or that i newly discovered this week:

leah duncan's new wrapping paper for the UK's betty & durpee. i've always had a soft spot for her designs and these paper sheets are just lovely!

i think this handthrown porcelain berry bowl with drainage holes from clam lab is just brilliant. i need one of these in my life.

original botanical painting on wood panel by britt hermann on sale.

how lovely are these? MoMA exclusive fine bone china teaspoon set by artist Chi-Wing Lee (found via pinterest). um, yes please.

block bagonia wallpaper by Over & Over for Anthropologie (tweeted by Grace from Design*Sponge). love the look of rustic kraft paper.

a new rifle paper co. valentine's day card and an old favourite. who's your valentine this year?

reusable foodwrap made from hemp and cotton fabric infused with beeswax, tree resin, and jojoba oil from abeego. finally an alternative to plastic foodwrap AND it's Canadian-made! this makes me oh-so happy (found via bookhou on facebook).

have a wonderful weekend!

these days // winter scenes

not only have i redesigned the blog, but i've also moved it to a new home: http://arterieandco.blogspot.com. i'm not typically one for soft grey tones, but i've been inspired by these recent winter scenes from my daily life in Laurentian Valley. i've been spending a good amount of time outdoors, mostly taking Glasgow for walks, and the soft beauty and wonder of winter has really setlled in.

oh, and i also updated the nova lily shop with a new winter banner.

life happens // new beginnings

05 January 2012

when i was a kid i was in love with John Lennon. he was, and still is, my favourite Beatle (i always thought Paul was a pretty boy!). i would endlessly listen to a copy of the 1988 Imagine: John Lennon soundtrack that my uncle recorded for my mom on cassette, often on headphones as i was falling asleep at night. one summer i bought a pair of iconic John Lennon round-eye sunglasses on a trip to Wasaga Beach and wore them everyday, devoutly, for which my family aptly called me "little Lennon." when they wore out, i bought a new pair. as a teenager, i rekindled my childhood love for both the Beatles and more specifically for John, connecting more deeply with his lyrics, philosphy, and political actions. when assigned a portrait project in a highschool art class, i naturally chose to draw John. to this day, it is the only life-like portrait i have ever produced in charcoal, and one of which i am oddly proud (it still hangs framed in my mom's living room). i used a blurred and softened photo of the original drawing to make the above image.

i always thought the song John wrote for his son Sean (Beautiful Boy (Darling Boy)) was absolute magic, and that it contained what might be the best words of wisdom from a father: "life is what happens to you while you're busy making other plans." i always find myself returning to this simple but thoughtful life lesson: life happens, often when you least expect it, or are to busy to notice.

i have been absent from this blog for the past couple months, and rather than feel bad about it, i have accepted that life happens. my plans for the month of November onwards exploded, in the face of, well, life. i left the city to be with andrew so that i could write my comprehensive exams in peace & quiet, but as soon as i arrived he had to take me to the hospital for a health issue that turned out to be physically and emotionally exhausting for both of us. i have been on sick leave ever since and am only now gearing up to return to my studies. while not under the best of circumstances, i think that my body was assertively telling me that i needed to take a break. so i did. for the first month, i did (almost) nothing and actually relaxed, nurturing my condition, but also my mind. i started to feel restless and anxious, and even guilty for doing so little and not being very productive, having to constantly remind myself to just take time. time to heal, to reflect, to endure, to calm, to slow down, to breathe, and to let things unfold. we didn't get internet installed until the week before Christmas (it is amazing how difficult getting service in a small town can be!), so i was literally disconnected and truly on my own while andrew spent long days at work in the backcountry. while it was lonely and incredibly frustrating at times, it was also refreshing and deeply nurturing. i put everything on pause, realizing that the pressure of the world "out there" could wait and would continue on without me. and really, what was i missing?

during this time, we also welcomed a new member to the family. meet Glasgow, our 11-month-old rescued dog, whom we believe to be a Shepherd/Saint Bernard or similar mix. actually having the time to spend with him when we first brought him home was so important (for all of us), and he has already changed our lives in innumerable and immeasuable ways. we are training him to be a bush dog so that andrew can take him to work in the forest.

and so, as the new year begins (although it has been somewhat delayed for me due to a stubborn and irritating cold/flu), i truly feel that 2012 is going to be a good one. finally. i am looking forward to so many positive changes and opportunities for growth this year. re-uniting and moving back in with andrew by spring/early summer. transitioning to small-town life. getting married in August. planning a wedding. developing and focussing my small business and working hard to take it somewhere (look for changes in the coming months and possible re-branding, although i am still undecided...). completing my comps and diving into my own research. writing more. wasting time less, or redirecting some of my time & energy. discovering what kind of blogger i am and will be and moulding a proper place for this blog in my life. developing a realistic routine that i can actually stick to, which for me also means working hard to become a morning person. spending more time in the bush this summer. uncovering all the good local food producers and continuing to improve our sustainable living efforts. living a simple, balanced life, or as close to one as possible.

oh, and i joined twitter

i hope your 2012 is filled with wonder, love, & happiness.

xo, sara
